How and When do I get my REAL ID in SC?

by | Jan 31, 2018 | Legal Tips

REAL IDs are not yet available in South Carolina. But once they are available you will be able to get a REAL ID at any SCDMV location. However, you must be prepared to get your REAL ID by bringing certain documents with you to the DMV.  For example, you will need:

  • Proof of Identity

Examples:  Birth certificate or unexpired US Passport

  • Proof of Social Security Number

Examples:  Social security card or W-2 Form that has your social security number and name and your employer’s name

  • Two Proofs of Current, Physical SC Address

Examples:  Current, unexpired SC license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old utility bill with the same name and address

  • Proof of all Legal Name Changes

Examples:  Marriage license or court order issued by your county’s probate or family court. You must show a complete name change history that links your birth certificate name to your present day name. If you have a valid US Passport or US Passport Card with your current, legal name, you may use that as your name change document.

For a complete list of documents the DMV will accept, you can check SCDMV Form MV-93.

If you received your first South Carolina beginner’s permit, driver’s license, or identification card in or after November 2010, the SCDMV may have your documents already on file. You may check the status of your documents on the DMV website by searching REAL ID and clicking the green “REAL ID DOCUMENT CHECK” or by calling 803-896-5000.

If you are interested in avoiding the future rush to get a REAL ID, you may take your documents now to the SCDMV so they may have the documents on file.  When REAL IDs are available and your information and documents are on file, you simply have to visit www.scdmvonline.com and order your REAL ID license.

You can pay online via credit card and the SCDMV will use your current picture.  Remember when you receive your REAL ID you must destroy your current license.  However, if you have an identification card, a commercial driver’s license, or are an international customer of the SCDMV you must visit an SCDMV branch with all required documents to have your card changed.
